This year marks one of the biggest elections in decades! Not only do we have a close presidential race, but Colorado also has some critically important proposals and amendments on the ballot. Issues such as raising the minimum wage and implementing a statewide health care system are among the many topics that will be voted on this November.
Unfortunately, many communities face barriers when registering to vote and when submitting their ballots. These communities include but are not limited to, people who are homeless, people who have been incarcerated, people living with disabilities, people in poverty and people of color. In order to ensure that everyone who wants to vote can do so this November, DenUM is partnering with the Colorado Participation Project of the Community Resource Center to register our clients to vote. We also are asking clients to fill out pledge cards. These pledge cards request an address and phone number, and with this information, the Colorado Participation Project will call voters and answer any questions they have about how to vote and remind them when Election Day is. We start this conversation by simply asking clients as they check in, “Are you registered to vote?”
DenUM is participating in National Voter Registration Day today. We set up a table in our lobby with posters, candy, stickers and nonpartisan information on the statewide ballot initiatives along with documents explaining voter eligibility requirements. We have a goal of registering 50 people to vote and of getting 1,000 pledge cards filled out. So far, we are already halfway to our goal!
I joined the DenUM staff two weeks ago as a Fellow. One of my main projects during my time at DenUM is to promote voter registration to our clients. I will be working until the election to get as many people who are interested in voting registered and pledged as possible. That way, all of our clients will have the opportunity to use their voice for issues and races that matter. During my time at DenUM, I will also promote client involvement and evaluate DenUM’s services.
If you are interested in registering to vote, you can use this link to help us reach our goal! Voting matters during this election season!
