Service Learning at DenUM
Getting the most out of a service project means knowing how your work helped real people.
For this reason, DenUM requires service groups to coordinate with Urban Education efforts in the following ways. Each group must:
Allow time for a facility tour and orientation.
No group should leave DenUM without understanding its important work and the many people affected by their service. Every group will be given a tour of the DenUM building and an introduction to the range of people that DenUM serves.
This is only the tip of the iceberg! For a truly rich experience, you are highly encouraged to include Urban Education activities with your service project - whether as a separate day or part of your one-day experience.
Commit to connecting our neighborhoods through an in-kind donation.
For many, Colfax Avenue is foreign territory. It seems so remote from real life, and the people there look so strange...
- Doing a food drive in one's neighborhood, school or faith community is a way of connecting one's own preferences and daily needs to those of the people on Colfax.
- Collecting baby items to bring to DenUM allows participants to imagine the lives of families in need, even before leaving home.
- Gathering toiletries reminds us that some do not have the privacy and conveniences that most of us enjoy.
This is a powerful way to begin a relationship with the poor.
