Community Issues/General Advocacy

Advocates for a Diverse Denver (ADD)

A neighborhood organization advocating to include and engage the voices of low-income and disenfranchised people on community issues.

 

All Families Deserve a Chance Coalition (AFDC)

A coalition of more than 40 agency representatives, local government participants and other advocates. AFDC focuses on welfare reform policies, child care issues, health care for low income families, transportation accessibility, and other related issues.

 

Capitol Hill United Ministries (CHUM)

A coalition of religious leaders and faith-based organizations in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Denver. CHUM advocates on housing issues and other issues that impact vulnerable and poor populations in Denver.

 

Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods (CHUN)

A neighborhood organization representing Capitol Hill for more than 30 years. With boundaries from 1st to 22nd Avenues and from Broadway to Colorado Boulevard, CHUN is a forum for discussing neighborhood issues, including licensing, historic preservation, crime prevention, the environment and recycling, neighborhood beautification, street maintenance, education and traffic control. CHUN sponsors the Capitol Hill People's Fair.

 

Colorado Religious Communities for the Common Good (CRCCG)

CRCCG is an interfaith and interdenominational alliance of religious communities and faith-based organizations that support the passage of Referendum C in the November 1, 2005 election.

 

Colorado Social Legislation Committee (CSLC)

This non-partisan group of service providers and citizens meets weekly during the legislative session to openly discuss legislation that affects low-income citizens/communities. Forums and panels with representatives on both sides of an issue are represented to ensure informed debate. Participants have the opportunity to share the needs of their clients in these forums.

 

In Your Faith

In Your Faith is composed of agencies throughout the greater metropolitan area who have common missions and are primarily faith based organizations.  The purpose is to share resources, problem solve, and collaborate services.

 

One Colorado Coalition

One Colorado’s mission is to win meaningful and lasting fiscal reforms so that our state can raise the revenue needed to invest in Colorado’s people and communities today and in the future.

 

Employment

Denver Employment Alliance

As a coalition of agencies that provide employment services, DEA advances employment issues through advocacy work.

 

Health Care

Colorado Consumer Health Initiative (CCHI)

A unified, statewide organization of consumers and consumer advocates whose goal is adequate and affordable health care for all.  The “Smoke-Free Denver” campaign is one initiative.

 
Housing & Homelessness

Homeless Education Legislative Lobby

A coalition of homeless service providers meeting weekly during the legislative session to strategize ways to effectively communicate with state law makers on issues relating to homelessness and poverty. The Legislative Lobby focuses heavily on housing and health care bills.

 

Housing Justice!

This statewide coalition is made up of primarily lay people from faith communities in the Denver metro area. Housing Justice! works to educate congregations on housing issues and to advocate for social justice.

 

Mayor’s Commission on Housing and Homelessness

(non-members)

The Mayor’s Commission has worked for several months to collect data and citizen input to create its “10-Year Plan to End Homelessness.” The 10-Year Plan’s first draft and many of the committee’s members were pulled from work done in the PLPP Coalition (see below).

 

Metro Denver Homeless Initiative (MDHI)

A coalition working with homeless assistance agencies in the seven-county Denver metropolitan area. The goal of MDHI is to provide maximum personal independence opportunities for homeless persons and persons at-risk of becoming homeless through the design and implementation of a Continuum of Care and Opportunities model for the metropolitan Denver community.

 

People Living in Public Places (PLPP)

A cross-community focus group that recognizes that changing urban neighborhoods have pushed people who live on the fiscal fringes further out. In particular people who have no income, or little income—and people who are queasy about living in a shelter—are reduced to non-persona status. 

 

Western Arapahoe County Homeless Alliance

A network of agencies devoted to addressing issues of homelessness. They sponsor the House of Hope shelter for women and children.

 

Hunger

Colorado Anti-Hunger Network (CAN)

A group of private, public and non-profit agencies coming together to learn about available food resources, share information, and improve availability, delivery services and resources benefiting Coloradoans who are experiencing hunger and food insecurity.

 

Incarceration & Reintegration

Colorado Criminal Justice Reform Coalition (CCJR)

A diverse, statewide coalition of individuals, organizations, and faith communities united to reverse the excessive use of incarceration and halt the privatization of prisons in Colorado.

 

Denver Reintegration Committee

A broad-based task force ranging from Department of Corrections representatives to grassroots programs. The task force seeks systematic support for the success of formerly incarcerated individuals.
